French women: Phantasm or reality?

The ever returning question of the French/Parisian classiness: How do they do? What's the trick? This seems to be the biggest obsession of American and English (mostly ;-)). Right, here a some parts of the answer:

1) The 'Française' is first of all a marketing argument from the fashion industry (what a disappointment). There are, of course, well dressed French women but they don't have the same style and all do not correspond to that image. And they aren't dressed like in the 50s!!!
Plus, most would rather die than be dressed the same way as others (means no personnality)...
2) They wear a lot of black and neutral colours, perhaps with an hint of -bright- colour or a print (red is a good example).
3) Simplicity, soberness and casual nochalance (fake!!). The point is to look like you haven't been too busy dressing up (the exact opposite of the ultra-perfect New Yorkese). It's not too munch or too little (MODERATION see French Classicism). And this in 5 minutes... (do not believe this...). You don't want to be that pathetic woman who spends three hours in her dressing in order to get some attention.
4) Make up and hair, less is more! A carefully put bed hair, red quickly put on the lips,... Again, the opposite of the inch of foundation that is to often seen in America (why do they do that?! Foundation should be invisible). You'll want to look like a natural beauty not like you need the whole make up industry to look al right. It's the difference between "I was born this way" and "I worked hard on it"
5) Why are they so thin? Multiple choice: smocking, haven't got a car and walk everywhere (in the cities) and.... the food portions are a quarter of what they are in the USA. This may explain a lot.
eg: one delicious macaron after a fine diner with foie gras, wine etc (not everday through ;-)) OR
Burgers, with a 1/4 gallon Coke and a big part of cheesecake...
6) Why don't they smile? Again, they may be angry, snob, timid or try to have an attitude (with a zest of chauvinism). And smile to much can be considered rude or an invitation,... Etiquette varies a lot between different countries.
7) The important thing is style and not fashion.
8) Etc.

I don't know why but the French seems to be the latest to know what the famous French style is made of! Pictures: I looked on the web and it is not simple to find a picture with the essence of the French style. I took Arletty, Piaf (for the little black dress), Charlotte Gainsbourg (because she is still alive) and "the kiss at the Hôtel de Ville" from Robert Doisneau (for some 50s flair).
I'm sooooo sorrrrryyy there is no "baguette"! ;-)))
